This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
