Intense Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the region.

Intense winds hitting speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties without power and forced authorities to cancel more than 100 flights, based on local media.

These gusts are impacting the entire South Island and lower areas of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have released rare high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in key areas such as these major districts.

Residents have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and get ready for further utility disruptions.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences mainly in the South Island, though authorities state that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have stated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, while trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gales.

In Wellington, a individual was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a individual was swept into approaching vehicles on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel to and from the city have been cancelled as a result of the winds, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

Meanwhile local leaders have declared a state of emergency, to facilitate emergency management operations.

Strike Action Amid Severe Conditions

The powerful gales on Thursday occur while many of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been described as a "mega strike", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

Yet the intense climate has pressured them to change some of their plans, with several external protests moved indoors or abandoned.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Agencies have issued flame prohibitions for fear of bushfires.
