Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
